“Children Learn What They Live”

Children have been on my heart this month at Old Stone.  Maybe it is due to helping our Christian Education Committee plan for next year’s Sunday School curriculum, or perhaps venturing off to Workcamp with our  Middle/High School Youth Group.   Since starting at Old Stone, I have always been impressed with the positive, Christ-like environment that surrounds our children as they grow in their faith.  It is due to good teachers!  Throughout the Bible there are numerous examples of the Holy Spirit empowering and equipping biblical figures to teach.

For example:

- Moses wrote and taught Scripture’s first five books           Deut. 4:5
        - Samuel taught during the early days of the kingdom           1 Sam. 12:23
        - David wrote and taught the Psalms                                        Prov. 4:4
        - Jesus taught the Old Testament and its’ fulfillment             Matt. 4:23, Luke 24:27
        - Paul taught the Word of God                                                 Acts 18:11, 20:20
        - Timothy taught church doctrine                                         Titus 2:1

I truly believe it is because of good, sound teaching and positive, Christ-like role models that we have such a  vibrant,  growing Christian Education program.  My prayer is that this coming year we take another step in grounding our children in the faith and love of God.  I found a poem from Dorothy Law Nolte entitled “Children Learn what They Live”:

If a child lives with criticism,
         He learns to condemn.
If a child lives with hostility,
         He learns to fight.
If a child lives with ridicule,
         He learns to be shy.
If a child lives with shame,
         He learns to feel guilty.
If a child lives with tolerance,
         He learns to be patient.
If a child lives with encouragement,
         He learns confidence.
If a child lives with praise,
                  He learns to appreciate.
If a child lives with fairness,
                  He learns justice.
If a child lives with security,
                  He learns to have faith.
If a child lives with approval,
                  He learns to like himself.
If a child lives with acceptance and friendship,
He learns to find love in the world.

Would you please take some time this month to pray for our Christian Education Committee, Sunday School Teachers, and Youth Group Leaders?   They work very hard to ensure our children live with encouragement, confidence, praise, fairness, security, approval, acceptance, and friendship.

                                                                                               Yours In Christ,
                                                                                                         Pastor Jim

                     SANCTUARY FLOWERS

If you would like to place flowers in the sanctuary to honor someone, perhaps an anniversary or in memory of a loved one, please contact Jan Schroeder @ 740-513-8268.  She will then know not to plan flowers for that particular Sunday.

We would like to let people know that the Deacon’s record the worship service on CD’s every Sunday.   If you know anyone that would appreciate a copy of the service, we would be more than happy to add them to our list.  See a Deacon, or call the church office at 369-3548.

           FATHER'S DAY

A Father’s Day breakfast was held at the church on Sunday June 20th.  It was very well attended and was such a blessing to all.  Thanks to everyone that participated and especially to all those that brought all the yummy breakfast foods!

                         VBS 2010

Vacation Bible School was a huge success!  It was held June 21-24 from 9:00-11:30.  There were 80 children registered this year from ages 2 through 8th grade.  This year’s theme was “Galactic Blast—A Cosmic Adventure Praising God”.  All the children had such a great time learning about God in a fun, informal atmosphere.  They made new friends and fellowshipped with old ones.

Bible School would not be the success that it is if it were not for the 60+ volunteers that make it all happen.  Our volunteers are absolutely the best that will be found anywhere!   They construct the sets, they sign all the kids in, they teach, they make & serve snacks, they nurture, they do anything and everything that is needed, but most of all they touch the lives of the children in a very positive way.  We also have a great group of teenage volunteers that are ready and willing to do  whatever needs to be done.

SUNDAY SCHOOL kicks off on September 12th  for the new year.   Watch for more  information in future newsletters.

JUNIOR CHURCH begins on Sunday, May 30 and runs until August 29.   There will be NO Sunday School on Sunday, September 5.   Jr. Church is for chiLdren Pre-K through 2nd Grade .    If you can teach, please sign up on the sheet or contact Becky Newland. We are asking for you to commit to at least 2 weeks.

New Sermon Series Beginning September 12th

The Book of  Revelation:
“Confronting the Mystery”

The Book of Revelation is one of the most widely misunderstood and controversial books of the  Bible.  Surveys have shown that by far, most questions concerning the Bible stem from the Book of Revelation.

Please join us for this 5-week study as we work through the book and grapple with topics such as:
How we view the end of times
The 7 Churches of the Revelation
The Signs and Symbols of Revelation
Armageddon – Who, What, Where, Why, and How?
The Business of Heaven

We will be reading much more scripture than our usually worship services, so please BRING A BIBLE that you are comfortable with that you can write in.

MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP

                                                   BEGINS IN SEPTEMBER

I can’t believe that Workcamp is over and the school year is right around the corner!  Your youth leaders at Old Stone church are pumped for another year to begin with fun, friends, and learning about God.  This year, we are offering one youth group,  6th Grade - High School!

What a great opportunity for our Middle Schoolers to be introduce to Youth Group life, and our High Schoolers will have a chance to lead and be great role  models!   Sarah, Will, and I are very excited to see this group in action.  We will either meet on Wednesday evenings, or Sundays right after church.  That is yet to be determined, but please keep a close eye on your Sunday bulletins.

Please encourage your children to attend!
Your in Christ, Sarah DuBois, Will Newland, and Pastor Jim
